What type of work does a farrier perform?

Hi. They do Horse shoeing and light veterinary work. If it's below a horse's ankles then a farrier can help.

In short, you drive a truck to the middle of nowhere, pull the shoes off a horse, custom fit a new shoe (using hammers, files, and an anvil), scrape the crap out of the hoof, shape and clean it (Kind of like clipping really really big toenails), and nail on the new shoes, finally you shape the new shoe to support the horse as best as possible.

They also diagnose different hoof conditions and can recommend other types of hoof treatments.

Farriers use specialized tools to shoe a horse. Not every horse has to wear shoes. Many horses are fine going barefoot, with regular trimmings. It is not safe for a person to do this by him or herself because horses' feet are very important.

He looks at the size and condition of each foot first. Next he will rasp the hoove to make it level or even . once he has done this he will melt some metal onto the hoove and wait until it has moulded and then he will nail it into the horses hoof . All shoes should fit snugly onto the horses feet and the hooves should be neatly trimmed and the nails should be evenly spaced and fit tightly. The Farrier should visit your horse every 4 to 6 weeks to remake your horses shoes.
