Why do Makah hunt whales?

Makah Whale HuntDate: 3.26.2012 :)The Makah are killing gray whales. The Neah bay treaty states the Makah, along with all Americans have the right to hunt gray whales. But, if all other Americans have the right to hunting the whales might be re-listed on the endangered species list. There is a group that was made to help stop whaling called IWC (International Whaling Commission), and even some Makah's dislike how their own people are taking away the lives of the whales. The Makah should not be able to kill these fascinating, loving, and harmless creatures.First of all, the Makah are trying to hunt whales illegally. Now the IWC have said "We have shot down the Makah at every attempt to hunt the gray whales!", and in 1996 ICRW (International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling) banned killing whales. Shockingly, in 2005, five Makah males killed a female gray whale and they knew that the ICWR had put a ban on killing whales to that makes an illegal. Now this shows that the Makah don't care if it is legal it not!Theses murderers are saying they should have the right to whale because it is their tradition, but they are not using the weapons they used before. They are using motorized boats in place of canoes and 50 caliber guns in place of harpoons, they stopped whaling on there own. So my question is if whaling was so important than why did they stop?Lastly, I will add that the Makah are not hunting for tradition anymore ,but for fun. The Makah's would stand on the whales and then fling off theses beautiful mammals and act like it was a prize for them to kill the gray whale.Originally,I felt that the Makah's hunting whales was fine because it was a part of their tradition and if I were them I wouldn't want someone to take away my traditions, but then I found out that the Makah's are not treating the hunt like a tradition so this is why it makes me upset. So please join the rest of us around the world to speak up for the helpless whales by making posters and do as much as you can and help us stop the killing of the amazing gray whale population... FOREVER!

What is the religion of the makah tribal Indians?

The Makah people have inhabited the area now known as Neah Bay for more than 3,800 years. The ancient Makah lived in villages, inhabiting large longhouses made from western red cedar. These longhouses had cedar-plank walls. The planks could be tilted or removed to provide ventilation or light. The cedar tree was of great value to the Makah, who utilized its bark to make clothing and hats. Cedar roots were used in basket making, while canoes were carved from whole trees to hunt seals, gray whales and humpback whales. The Makah acquired much of their food from the ocean. Their diet consisted of whale, seal, fish, and a wide variety of shellfish. They would also hunt deer, elk, and bear from the surrounding forests.H

What did the Makah American Indians do that was so shocking and what was their reasoning?

They asserted their right to hunt whales based on their oral history of whaling being part of their past culture. Whaling by the Makah was suspended earlier because commercial whaling had depleted whale stocks so much. They also asserted that their right to hunt whales was guaranteed by treaty with the US government. The 1855 Treaty of Neah Bay, states in part: "The right of taking fish and of whaling or sealing at usual and accustomed grounds and stations is further secured to said Indians in common with all citizens of the United States." They have not only asserted the right but have followed through by taking at least one whale since courts confirmed their right to do so.
