Shih Tzus need loving families and lots of love and attention. They are indoor dogs that need the attention of their owners or at least a companion dog. There have been many stories of this breed dying, usually of lonliness, when their owners go away for long periods. Shih Tzus, like all puppies, are really hyper when they'e young so they will need toys to keep them busy or they'll get into trouble. They are a very stubborn breed of dog with an "I do what I want attitude" so they need to be disciplined firmly. If at all possible, make a schedule. Puppies are similar to humans in that they like routines, so if you set an eating time, play time, and napping time it gives the dog structure and stability. A schedule will also keep them from getting bored and greatly helps with digestion. If you always have food laid out for a dog they'll eat sporadically, and their digestion system will be the same. On a similar note, I've noticed Shih Tzus need familiarity. For example if you want them to kid-friendly, then you must raise them with children. Shih Tzus need exercise like any other dog. One way to exercise them is to go on walks with them. Shih Tzus are small dogs so remember that while sometimes they will have a "big dog" attitude other times they'll be really afraid. Watch them carefully while walking, sometimes if you take them to new places or a place with loud noises the Shih Tzu will act fearful. Like most dogs, they just want to please their owner. The best gift you can give them for your satisfaction is love and compassion for their needs.

A Shih Tzu crossed with a Dachshund, often referred to as a "Shih Tzu-Dachshund mix" or "Shih Tzu Doxie," typically has a lifespan of around 10 to 15 years. Factors such as genetics, diet, exercise, and healthcare can influence their longevity. Regular veterinary check-ups and a healthy lifestyle can help maximize their lifespan.
