The populations of animals they feed on would get smaller and as a consequence so would other populations of other animals which prey on the same things that wolves do.

If a population of wolves were unable to sustain itself (because of the number of prey), they would lessen or stabilise at a number. Populations don't usually grow indiscriminately, except for us human beings, of course, till now that is.

Usually populations stabilise easily.
