Various answers believe there would be a change to the food chain and the ocean environment:

  • The way I see it is that, whales eat planktom by the tons being as large as a bus. When they become extinct, there would be an overpopulation of planktom which will affect the ecosystem in a way not experienced before.
  • If whales were extinct, it is likely that a lot of the smaller fish would take over the ocean because there's not much there to eat them. Whales keep the life cycle in the ocean alive.
  • I think that the prey of the whales will overpopulate and effect the food chain of the ocean.

We can only speculate what might happen if whales became extinct. We should already be seeing the possible effects due to the vastly reduced numbers of various whales. Please see the discussion below for a link to an interesting read about the effects of whales on the environment.
