It all depends on whether the cat is off it's food but will drink water, which would suggest that it either has a hard-to-shift furball, or if it won't touch any sort of sustenance at all, then it is probably something more serious & the animal should be taken to a vet. If the cat is lethargic more than usual, displays unusual hiding tactics, i.e. shies away from it's habitual spots, drinks copious amounts of water & pees alot it could be suffering from kidney disease/failure (which was the case with one of mine), especially if it is an older feline. It is quite prevalent in cats of advanced years & there is very little that can be done other than to either pay to prolong its pain or accept that it would be better to give it a pain-free release.
Neither option is particularly nice, but bear in mind the interest of the animal.
