When can you bathe your newborn kitten?

It is best to wait until the kittens have their eyes open before bathing.The mother will keep them clean. The mother can bathe a few days after giving birth. Make sure you totally dry her before putting her back with the kittens to prevent them from getting wet and chilling. When the kittens can bathe make sure you dry them completely before returning to mother to keep them from chilling.

Generally if a kitten is weaned (no longer nursing on mother cat) it is old enough to be cared for without the presence of the mother. Most cats will learn to clean themselves by watching the mother and by being groomed by the mother at an early age. If you must bathe your mother dog do so in doors or until the outdoor temperature is at least 80 degrees F. This holds true with any cat [although I would never try to bathe a cat outside] or dog the chance of a horrified pet escape/lost is too risky. In this case the whelping female [mother dog nursing] should be bathed in the bath tub and dried well before returning to her pups. Bathe only if absolutely necessary, there is a school of thought that puppies may not recognise mom after smells are washed off. As for the pups DO NOT Bathe them until they are weaned[when mom pushes them away] and no longer nurses them. Because when you bathe the pups there is the chance of infection early on as the umbilical cord has not totally healed and they can aspirate the bath water. Speaking of, keep dad far away as there have been documented cases of the male dogs [not just dad] killing the pups so as to put mom back into heat. Also cases of the mom killing any male who comes too close to her and her pups. Mom and puppies need rest and quiet. Be sure to give Mom extra food [so she can continue producing enough milk] and PLENTY of drinking water also very important for producing enough milk.
