When did the beluga whale become endangered and why?

Belugas oficially became endangered in October 2008. They were listed under the near threatend catogory. Before that it was listed under vurnerable. In the next five years they will probrably move up one on the list, becoming more endangered. To answer why, belugas are endangered for many reasons, mainly from pollution, natural predators, hunting, offshore drilling, and Naval Sonar. When they get trapped in the ice, they will die. Polar bears and killer whales hunt them. It used to be legal to hunt Belugas, but it isn,t anymore, although they are still hunted by northern people and commercial fisheries for their skin, blubber, and meat. When toxic chemicals are put in the water, belugas become sick and die. Naval Sonar confuses belugas and causes them to beach themselves, while oil drilling polutes their waters.
