When should a dog have puppies?

Waiting till your dog's 3rd heat is the safest way to go. This is generally between 16 and 22months. Basenji dogs can have puppies at their 2nd heat, between 18 and 24months of age. Do not breed your dog till she is 100% mature. Maturity is after the 'teenager' dog stage, which is between 6 and 15months of age. Dogs are not usually mature, even small dogs, until 18months.

It is not healthy for a dog to have puppies when it is under two years of age AND after it has had it's hips and eyes checked for potential hereditary diseases. It is not recommended to breed unless you have a dog with exceptional qualities and you already have stable homes for the puppies because of the tens of thousands of dogs that are put down in the shelters every year. It is not recommeded for mixed breed dogs to be bred because of the overpopulation. Like humans, dogs can die during the birthing process, so you must weigh the risk/benefits. Also, there are many health benefits to having a dog spayed rather than breeding, such as avoiding estrogen based cancers.

The youngest age a SMALL dog should have puppies is 2 years, a LARGE dog must be at least 3. Small dogs can have puppies at 1.5 year, but this is a risky process, you must understand that your dog has a big chance of dieing at or even before the birth and her puppies have also more of a chance of dieing because of many reasons such as, the female dog abandoning them because she is still young. Make sure your dog has had at the minimum, one season before she has her first litter and make sure she is in good health before you diced to breed her.
