If you can smell it you should probably clean it then. But if its a job you would rather put off as long as you can every other day would be the most I would wait because if the litter box gets too full your cat is likely to look for other places to go like behind couches, clothes piles anywhere he likes for that matter. But it really depends on how often your cat goes, every cat is different.
