The first recorded sighting of an orangutan by Europeans occurred in the early 16th century, around 1503, when explorers encountered the species on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra. However, orangutans have been known to local populations long before this time. These great apes have inhabited their native habitats for millions of years, making them one of the oldest hominid species.
