Pandas have been around for about two or three million years, and though evidently quite rare, were known to the Chinese for quite some time before their existence was revealed to the rest of the world (particularly western Christians with whom China increasingly opened up trade) towards the end of the nineteenth century; they were considered noble, and prized by successive lines of Chinese rulers... however, there appear to be no artistic depictions of Pandas pre-dating the twentieth century despite a prevalence of bamboo in early Chinese art, and some depictions of bears of other types.
