Should you tie your horse loosely or tightly when tying him to a post?

You should not tie a knot at all! The best thing to do when tying a horse is to do a special kind of tie(you can probobly reseach it on Google) that doesnt allow the horse to untie itself, but allows you to pull the end and the rope will untie, making sure you can untie your horse quickly in case of an emergancy.Which is called a slip knot.

When you tie your horse to a fence post you should always tie to the post not the rail. If you tie to the rail the horse could pull it down, trust me they're strong enough to do that. Always tie with a quick relese knot. If you don't know how to do one you can look it up or ask someone you know how to do it if they know how. Never tie using a bridle. they can snap the reins really easily and it can also hurt there mouth. Always tie with a halter and lead rope. Make sure that you tie the rope at about 18 inches long. that way they can still move there head, but can't get there feet caught up in the rope. It depends on what you are doing and what kind of post it is. If you are just grooming, tie him loose but not to where he can just walk away. If you are tacking up, tie him nice and tight. If it's a metal pole the lead rope is likely to slip around. With a wooden post, it's not as easy.

It depends somewhat on the horse. How easily spooked are they?, how well trained are they?, etc. Usually, you wouldn't do like they do in the western movies where they sort of toss the horse's bridle reins across the top of a fence and then just go away and leave them. Many horses would be long gone if something happened to spook them (or even just one other horse gets spooked nearby) while waiting like that. Herding animals, like horses, are always on the ready and on the watch for a reason to run in a group away from something that might be a threat, if one goes, they will almost always all go.

Tying a horse up by the reins that are attached to the bridle bit also could risk injury to their mouths if they pull away from the post in a panic. So, having an alternate rope attached to a halter or other method of tying them up is really essential if you will be leaving them on their own while they are tied up.

Assuming you have arranged for this other rope or lead strap, then usually a quick release knot is all you need to use if they are well trained and calm horses used to being tied. If they may be prone to spook and pull, then you may need to consider other options. Nowadays there are multiple options such as spring-tensioned ties, break away cross ties, etc. available at tack shops.

Cotton rope is probably the best tie or lead rope, leather isn't as easy to tie and much more difficult to untie in a hurry if they get pulled too tight since they aren't round, and nylon can create serious rope burns if the horse gets tangled and panics.

Tie to a strong post if you plan to "tie solid" to make it so that if they pull away, they can't get loose, but this can also risk injury to their necks and backs. Many people don't tie solid in the paddock or where the horse and people around will be relatively safe if the horse pulls away. Instead, they will tie the lead to a loop of baling twine, string, or something else around the post so it is easily broken if the horse panics and bolts. Again, there are products available that you can buy that are for a quick release.

They should be tied to the post high enough on the post so they will not be able to step across the rope or get feet tangled up, at about a height just above their chest height, but not so high that they can't move their heads freely. The loose rope should be no longer than a man's arm (as an old saying goes).

As mentioned above, use a quick release or slip knot so you can easily untie them in a hurry if you need to free them in a struggle or some other dangerous situation.

Never tie them to something that isn't attached to a solid structure, for instance, do not tie them to a log on the ground or other loose object. If the horse spooks, it will not stop them from running because they are stronger, but now they will have something dragging along that can cause them to get hurt, or will make them feel like the thing that scared them is still chasing them when they see the log or whatever it is dragging right behind them as they run. They may be miles away before they slow down or stop.

You dont tie the horses directly you put a halter on them which is like a face collar for horses and clip a rope to their halter which you can tie up to a strong tree or post.

You should leave the horse enough slack to let it move its head around a little bit, but not enough to get himself tangled in. About 1 or 2 feet of slack is good. You should also use a quick release knot incase your horse gets spooked, our you can use an Aussie Tie Ring, which I have found to be very helpful.
