when he growls while sitting w/ your wife, have your wife walk away and comeback in 30 seconds. he might get the point that growling means so lady.

but he could interpret it as people mean no lady so you.............

give him a treat (holding it so he can only lick it) as people approach, walk in front, and leave. if he growls, take him away from the situation for 10 seconds. DO NOT GIVE HIM THE TREAT. you may give him the treat after you let him lick with no growling.
