There are no native deer in Tasmania, but there are deer farms and certainly plenty of wild deer. The wild deer problem is so extensive that, in January 2010, there were proposals to extend the Tasmanian deer hunting season to try to control the number of wild deer roaming the state.

It is believed that there are about 30,000 Fallow deer in a region roughly bordered by a line from Launceston to Derwent Bridge to Pontville to the east-coast to St. Helens and back to Launceston.
