Where did the werewolf legend begin?

The werewolf legend probably has independent origins in a number of cultures, probably the result of incidences of violent psychosis. Consider the Windigo of North America.

The earliest incidence of a man/wolf legend I'm aware of is the Legend of King Lycoan in Arcadia (ancient Greece) Arcadian was a city state of Aborigines that preceded the true Greeks. King Lycoan offered Human flesh for Zeus to eat. Zeus took offence and change Lycoan into a wolf.

There are many speculations about where werewolf legends originated. Some say that the legend of werewolves started with Greek Mythology and a king named Lycan. The theory I favor most is that werewolf legends came from viking berserkers. These vicious warriors would wear bear and wolf skins when going into battle. But, the real reason they were associated with monsters was their wild rage. Driving themselves into fits of fury before battle, berserkers would rush the enemy with abandon. They used anger and rage to block out pain and they could sustain terrible damage and continue to fight. Arrows, sword wounds, spears, nothing would stop them until they were dead. They were so vicious that they would often end up attacking their own comrades. However, this is just one of many ways the myth could have started.

The werewolves started in the starting-blocks just like all the other runners. All these these suggestions that they had a false start are just untrue. They won that relay fair and square.

There are a lot around so its not clear, but one of the first myths was from Germany:

The first recorded Werewolf sighting took place around the countryside of German town Colongne and Bedburg in 1591. An age-old pamphlet describes those shivering moments vividly. Few people cornered a large wolf and set their dogs upon it. They started to pierce it with sharp sticks and spears. Surprisingly the ferocious wolf did not run away or tried to protect itself, rather it stood up and turned out to be a middle-aged man he was Peter Stubbe from the same village

There are many different origins to where werewolves come from. Some say they originated from the medieval times in Europe. One story told there was one about the "Wolf-Man". It is said that he had killed over 100 people in a small village, mostly women. Books told of wolf-like bite marks in the victims. Another story is that they originated from a Native American tribe. This tribe sometimes did special rituals, making themselves into "skinwalkers". Skinwalkers are said to be cursed, although they have the power to change into any animal form, especially wolves. They can also imitate the exact voice of anyone they hear. That is all I know of, but there are probably other stories too. Hope this Helps. :)
