Students from secondary schools who study the book called Whale Rider would be asking this question. Probably because of their projects that is based on this story.

Whales are huge mammals that live in the ocean. They give birth to their young in the water. As the weather changes, the whales migrate from the colder areas to the warmer areas to retain their body temperature. The killer whale(actually a dolphin.), short-finned pilot, long-finned pilot, false killer and melon-headed whales are some examples that move to New Zealand. Their migratory path may be observed through SYDNEY.
