Camel bulges are actually filled with fat. The longer a camel does not eat or is able to drink the "hump(s)" will appear deflated since it will pull from the fat store for survival.

A camel is scarce; it lives off this fat when food and water are unavailable.
They can (like many animals) 'smell' water from considerable distances away. The water they drink is stored as fat in their hump (or humps). The body absorbs the fat as, and when required.
