The animals most commonly recognised as kangaroos are grazing animals, and they only eat fresh grass and new shoots. Consequently, they are a semi-nomadic animal, roaming in "mobs" in search of healthy food sources. They seem to have an innate awareness of where the rains have been, or are coming, and they will often move to those areas. They prefer open plains, grasslands and open bushland which is not too densely packed with trees.

However, there are over 60 species of kangaroos, and they find food and shelter in different habitats. Wallabies prefer more covered bushland, except for rock wallabies, which prefer rocky cliffs and hillsides. Tree kangaroos live in rain forests, where they feed on broad leafed rainforest vegetation and fruits.
