== The Golden Retriever - When initially bred, these dogs were actually classed with all flat-coated retrievers, as "flat-coats, golden". It was only after they surpassed the popularity of other flat-coated retrievers that they received their own classification. In Britain/Ireland, where the dog originates, the shades of the dog which are preferred range from a light cream or champagne colour to a rich lustrous golden. However, when brought to the US, show judges altered their preference of the dog to include much darker colours, almost reaching the deep reds of the Irish Setter. It is unusual that they will still refer to the breed as golden when it is actually a red or auburn colour. This could be where some of the confusion with regard to the origin of the name arises! The retriever was not bred for hunting specifically, that's a popular misconception! It's job is in it's name - retriever! They were bred to fetch the bodies of what their master had been hunting. They were bred never to harm the game which had been shot, simply to gently pick it up and return it unharmed to their master! To this day they are renowned for being incredibly gentle dogs who will practically never snap or act agressively. It's all got to do with what they were originally bred for!
