Behind and inward of the shoulder. From the side, when the bear's fore leg is in it's forward stride, a shot to the upper rear shoulder should make contact with the heart. The ribcage protects it, but a high-powered missile from a hunting rifle should prove fatal. From the front, aim for the neck, mid centerline. From the rear, no shot. Quarter away - same as from the side (above). Quarter approaching, aim for the neck.

Bow shots? No dea, I don't bow hunt for bear.
