Hereford is a pure breed, and the origin of the colour pattern of the Hereford breed is pretty much unknown. So you can't find two breeds to cross to find Hereford, unless you can find a Hereford cow and a Hereford bull and "find" a Hereford calf!

What type of cattle is a Bradford?

There is no such breed of cattle called the Bradford. However, there is a breed called the Braford, and it is a composite beef breed of Brahman (Bos indicus) and Hereford (Bos taurus) in a 3/8 to 5/8 cross, respectively. The American Brafords (known simply as Brafords) are a close relation to the Australian Brafords and are comprised of the composite mix as mentioned previously, however with the Australian Brafords they are comprised approximately 1/2 Brahman and 1/2 Hereford. Both Australian and American Brafords are stabilized breeds, not hybrids like when you cross a Brahman over a Hereford and get a Brahman-Hereford F1 cross calf. Please see the related links below for more.

Why are quarter horses crossbred?

The Quarter Horse is a versatile, intelligent, docile and beautiful breed and is crossed with many other breeds to improve other bloodlines. Paints and Appaloosas can be bred to full blooded QHs and still be considered full Paints and Appys. When bred to the Arabian the cross is called a 'quar-ab' and these crosses can be registered 1/2 Arab and can compete at Arabian shows in the 1/2 Arab classes. By selective cross-breeding new breeds can be created. One of the newest breeds of horses is called 'American Warmblood'. Many breeders use the Quarter Horse to cross with larger European warmbloods to create this new breed of American sporthorse.
