This depends on which breed of Bulldog you mean. English Bulldogs may be stocky, but they are short and usually unhealthy, meaning that in this case a Pit Bull Terrier would be stronger. The case is the same for French Bulldogs. American Bulldogs are similar in build to a Pit Bull, except for their shorter muzzle. I would say that American Bulldogs and Pit Bulls are approximately of the same amount of strength.

there IS no English staffodshire bull terrier BREED. :S Yes, there IS an English Staffordshire Bull Terrier breed. There are 2 types of Staffordshire Bull Terrier breeds - American AND English. If you wanted to know breeder and bloodline details of English Staffords I would recommend you contact your National Kennel registry for details.
Firstly, the Pit Bull is not actually a breed, but the term is used to refer to breeds such as the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier and sometimes the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Assuming by ''Pit Bull'' you mean the American Pit Bull Terrier or American Staffordshire Terrier, the difference is that the Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a few inches shorter, weighs less and was first bred in England. ''Pit Bull'' type dogs are unfortunately illegal in many countries, such as the UK, with the exception of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier; which is still legal.
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier was first bred in Staffordshire, England, using Bulldog's (not today's ones) and local Terrier's. The American Pit Bull Terrier and American Staffordshire Terrier were bred using English Staffordshire's by increasing their size and weight. Therefore, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier was the main breed used in the development of the Pit Bull - not the other way around.

The Pit Bull itself is only one breed, but there are two other breeds that are very similar. These are the American Staffordshire Terrier and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. The Pit Bull is not an officially recognised breed and so is not bred to a standard. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a smaller recognised version of the Pit Bull, and the American Staffordshire Terrier is a recognised version of the Pit Bull.
