Why are Belgian people called buffaloes?

I grew up in the Belgian community on the east side of Detroit (Harper and Chalmers) and my Grandmother and others called fellow Belgians Buffaloes. I was told it referred to the fact that many of the old Belgians worked on a major public worls project in Buffalo, NY. ? True?
