Why are bisons endangered?

Bison are threatened because, during the 1800s, hunters attempted to exterminate them. They hoped that if there were no bison, the Native Americans who relied on them would starve. Then the land would be free to use for settlers of European descent. They almost caused bison to go extinct. Today, there is a shortage of habitat for large populations of bison.

The bison are no longer endangered, breeders over the past century have raised their population to over 150,000 in north America alone from a mere 1,200 during the 18th century.
