The name came from the whalers. They saw that these whales had a large sloping of skin, tissue, and blubber in front of their dorsal fins giving them an exaggerated 'hump' on their backs. With some humpbacks it is very pronounced, and with others, barely there. But, humpbacks they were called, and so still are. You can find the references in many of the old whaling records.
