Unfortunately for them, Pit Bull Terriers are often seen as a hard Dog to own and are used as a status symbol by irresponsible owners. These owners get a strong Dog such as a Pit Bull to make themselves look tough, and often mistreat their Dogs and encourage them to be aggressive. Many of these owners also raise their Dogs to fight in a pit for their financial gain. It is true that the Pit Bull Terriers own loyal temperament is its own downfall, as these Dogs are willing to do anything for their owner, including to fight to the death for them when commanded to. Pit Bulls will do anything to please their owner, so when their owner says kill another dog, they will continue trying even when completely exhausted. This unconditional loyalty, coupled with its tough-looks and muscular build, make the Pit Bull the dog of choice for gangs and dog fighters alike. And when irresponsible owners get hold of strong dogs and train them for aggression, it is only a matter of time before one gets lose and does what it has been trained to do - attack. And when a Pit Bull attacks it is not treated like a normal dog attack, say, by a Labrador, it makes the front page of every newspaper nationwide. The media is only interested in stories that will sell papers, and fear sells papers. People are not scared of Golden Retrievers or Jack Russells because they don't look scary so an attack by one of them will not get any attention. However, a muscular Pit Bull Terrier with cropped ears and dog fighting scars owned by a hoodie is simply terrifying to the general public, so it makes national news. I have known of a child fatally mauled by the family Golden Retriever, but when reported to the papers they had no interest. The next week I heard of a man who's DOG was attacked by a Pit Bull-type dog when he was out walking and it made dozens of papers. It is the undue media hype that has turned the Pit Bull (once known as the ''Nanny Dog'' because of its good temperament with children) into such a mythical monster. Countless studies have been performed, including by the American Temperament Test Society, which have proved time and time again that there are no bad breeds, only bad owners. Genetics only plays a tiny part in a Dog's temperament, how the Dog is brought up and trained however plays an enormous part. It is time for people to stand up and realize that killing innocent Dogs because of their appearance is simply wrong. Hopefully laws that ban Pit Bull-type dogs will soon be replaced by Deed Not Breed legislation that is not based on what the Dog looks like but its temperament instead.
