The simplest answer to this is ignorance. People see the muscular, athletic and relatively large Pit Bull as a dog to be feared. This can be put down to the media giving a false or exaggerated image of the breed as a snarling, uncontrollable beast that will kill anything. Of course anyone who has ever owned a Pit Bull will know that this is far from true. The Pit Bull can do serious damage, but raised correctly they can (like any other breed) make a wonderful and loving pet. Proof that the media have an enormous impact on stereotyping is the fact that the highest number of dog bites in the UK alone come from Golden Retrievers, yet barely any news is ever reported of this breed attacking. Instead, breeds that look 'aggressive' such as the Pit Bull, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Rottweiler, German Shepherd etc. are blamed. Blame the deed, not the Breed!
Pit-bulls are the most common type of dog, in dog fights.

There are many, many people who own pitbulls as pets and find them to be the greatest breed of dog to have as a family pet. Those who believe that pits are not in most homes is based on fear and "facts" by the media of how incredibly dangerous pit bulls are. The problem with this view is that many people don't realize it's not the breed that's the problem, its the owners.
It is very difficult to get an accurate count in dog bite statistics because most of the time they are not reported and if they are reported it is often not known what the breed of dog is. However, the statistics that are available do not show pit bulls as most likely to bite. In fact, when tests were conducted by the American Temperament Testing Society (ATTS), Pit Bulls received a passing score better than some breeds who are considered nice dogs, such as Beagles and Golden Retrievers! Also, as stated above, there are several dog breeds commonly referred to as pit bulls. So, based on that alone, they are much more likely to be blamed for an attack than other breeds because the number of dogs called pit bulls is skewed far higher than the actual number of American Pit Bulls Terriers there really are
