Rabbits normally sleep during the daytime. Rabbits are crepuscular, meaning they are most active for the hours around sunrise and sunset. Rabbits are usually more active overnight than they are during the day. This is normal behaviour.

Rabbits are sometimes shy because they haven't been properly socialized (or worse: they've been neglected or abused in the past). Another reason rabbits are sometimes shy is if the home you've made for them isn't very rabbit friendly. Either way, the solution is to spend some time reading up on rabbit care and behaviour, make some adjustments to the rabbit's habitat, and be very patient with the rabbit in terms of how you treat her -- she'll come around eventually. Some Tips:

• Give the rabbit a hidey-hole or "nest" area in her cage (or hutch or crate or room or wherever you keep her). This can be as simple as a cardboard box with two holes cut in the sides (see the related link below on paper safety and rabbits), or you could combine it with the litter box by using a litter box with a lid (but, again, cut a second hole in the side -- rabbits, especially shy ones, sometimes feel trapped and scared when there's only one possible escape), or you could buy something fancy. This is a place the rabbit can go to feel safe; and it's a place that's her territory. (Rabbits are very territorial.) Unless it's an emergency or something, never pull the rabbit out of her hidey-hole or pet her when she's in there or bother her (gentle talking is fine, though): this is HER place, and hers alone.
• As much as possible, treat the rabbit's entire cage as hers. Put the food and water dishes close to the door so you don't have to reach in and disturb the area just to feed her. Do the cleaning and tidying of the cage when she's not in it; ideally, do it when she can't even see you doing it. Don't let toddlers and other animals into her cage. Ideally, arrange the cage so that she can hop in and out on her own, so you don't have to reach in and pull her out when it's time to come out.
• Don't expect the rabbit to want to cuddle in your arms or on your lap. Rabbits are land creatures; unlike cats, they don't climb trees and stuff: they really have no reason to be above ground, so they don't usually like it. Many rabbits never come to like it at all, so get used to spending "floor time" with the rabbit. Sit on the floor and watch her explore the room. Let her hop up to you, pet her, and then let her hop away: don't pull her towards you or restrain her or grab at her.
• Speak in gentle tones around the rabbit constantly. Constantly put your hand up to her nose to let her smell you, but don't always pet her. Let her get used to you.
• Make sure the rabbit is entertained with lots of hay to graze on (unlimited amounts; available 24/7), and some toys and play structures. Let the rabbit out for play, exercizing, and socializing at least 3 hours a day. If all the rabbit has to do all day is sit there worrying, she'll always be shy.
• Spay/neuter the rabbit: it usually makes the rabbit more social (and there's other benefits to spay/neuter as well, especially in females).

What you've described is a symptom of pain. When they're in pain, rabbits sometimes withdraw from other people and animals, become "anti-social," depressed, and uninterested in food, activity, or snuggling.

It's impossible to say what exactly is wrong with your bunny -- but, if there's no obvious injuries (like broken bones, bleeding) or illnesses (like fur loss, a swollen eye, discharge from the nose or eyes, breathing through the mouth), then it's likely the problem is dental (like a molar spur) or digestive upset (GI stasis).

A vet should be able to figure out what's wrong and treat your bunny. No matter what's wrong, your bunny has the best chance of survival if you go to a vet, at least for pain medication. Pain management is very important for rabbits: even if the problem is minor, rabbits in pain often decide to stop eating, and this quickly leads to deathly illness (GI stasis) because, unlike most animals, rabbits can't safely fast for short periods of time.

If your rabbit hasn't been acting this way for very long, then he might recover on his own soon; but, if he doesn't, then he won't recover without help from the vet.
