several reasons for ex.; it's a territorial thing

iLogic101 says: Usually a cat will do this to communicate their disapproval with something. A cat may do this when being left home alone for too long of a time. The cat may require attention that he or she is not getting. If a cat's litter box is placed too close to their feeding dish, they will not go to the bathroom there. They will not relieve themselves too close to their eating place and will therefore find another place, which is usually a place where their owner does not want them to go; like on the furniture. Also the cat, which is a very clean animal, will stop using the litter box if it is not cleaned regularly or frequently enough. Keep their litter box clean and they will make it their first choice. Keep it far away from their eating place. Remember to reward the desired behavior, i.e. the urinating in the right place, and avoid scolding or hitting the cat for the undesired behavior. Show the cat unconditional love. Additionally, urinary tract infections are very popular in male cats. You may want to get him checked. It may be out of his control. He may want to urinate, but it hurts so much that he holds it until he can no longer and then lets it go regardless of where he is. I hope this is helpful.
