At the very beginning of the book Sher Khan (the tiger) attacks a party of workers at night. In the confusion Mowgli wanders into the wolf den of Demon (the she wolf) who has just given birth and is generously disposed to any infant. Sher Khan shows up demanding the man-child but the entrance to the it too tight for him and he won't squeeze in with Demon snarling at him.
