The plague was originally carried by fleas on rats. these rats moved the plague quickly, especially by boat. It was spread inland because there was was a lack of knowledge of medicine or hygienic practice. In fact, because the common thought was that God was angry at humanity, monks would whip themselves in an act of penince, and further spread plauge with their blood and the fact that they moved around from town to town.
