Not only is it just comforting to the cats to know that their owner is interacting with them, but it allows the cats to listen to their owner's tone of voice and determine their owner's behavior a little better. Some cats actually do respond to words like 'dinner' and 'come on'. Talking directly to the cat, with eye contact, will show your pet that it hasn't been forgotten or that something is happening to him.

Also, it would be kind of weird being silent with a favorite pet, and owners like me just like to either pretend (?) that their cat can understand them, or we just get into the habit of explaining things or letting out things to them.
