All animals need various salts as part of their diet. Salts are needed in the blood and to make nerves work.

In the middle of continents there is very little salt in the environment and the Animals have to specifically look of it and eat it, usually in natural "salt licks" or by eating certain soft rocks. Generations of animals will use these resources and they become part of the animals migration routes.

Humans frequently put salt blocks down at waterholes so that the animals stay longer (licking the salt) at the holes, enabling tourists to get a better view.
