Why do mini schnauzers have a beard?

It is the way they're groomed. And mostly, their hair just grows that way, you can't stop if from growing that way. Also, it looks better than scraggly.

Actually, Minature schnauzers were originally bred to keep mice away. The beard made it so if the mice attacked the dogs neck, it would get a mouthful of beard fur rather than doing damage to the neck of the schnauzer. It is like a safety thing for them.

The schnauzer was used as a "ratter" to catch vermin and used by farmers to protect their harvest. The main reason they have a beard is for protection of their face. This beard wasn't always like we see it today, nice, soft, and (most of the time) clean; it was hardened with dirt, mud, debris, etc… which formed a type of "armor" against the vermin's teeth and/or claws the schnauzer was attacking.

This is a trait that was bred into them by crossing breads; they may be most closely related to German Pinschers, and the spitz-type breeds.

Miniature Schnauzers have ugly hair cuts because back then in Germany they would cut the hair so ugly they thought the hair cut looked so GOOD!

It was a style thing to dock their tails, and it's also good for the health of their backsides. Parasites tend to grow under tails and docking them keeps them in the air. It's illegal to dock tails of dogs now so any Schnauzers under the age of two or three will have long tails.

There not all brown, in fact I have a dog, its a miniature mechanized and Romans a GRAY beard, so its just how they were born like how our hair colors different.
