otters live near fresh water to clean the salt out of their fur. They do this to keep it waterproof, otherwise they would die of cold. Er ... no. Otters are aquatic mammals. They have webbing between their toes to help them swim better, and thick waterproof fur that they keep waterproof with their own body oil. They live near rivers and ponds and the ocean because they are aquatic - they eat fish and shellfish and other water animals. Otters are much more easily killed by predators like bears and bobcats when they are out of the water. A swimming river otter is nearly impossible for a predator to catch, though sea otters have more predators (like sharks) that can catch them. Otters enemies are few. The otter pups enemies are largely wolves, large Birds of Prey and large reptiles. The ability to swim and quick access to water, helps them save themselves. There is evidence that sea otters are being attacked by killer whales. The markings on otter carcasses matches dentition of the orca. Possibly there is evidence of shark attacks, but I am not sure.
Sea otters often sleep on top of the water. Their fur has air pockets which keep them afloat and they tangle themselves in kelp or sea weed as to not drift to far from shore.
yeah dolphins sleep but half of there brain is awake so it can breathe and otters sleep in kelp and on land
Sea Otters sleep in groups while wrapped in seaweed so they do not float away. The Alaskan Sea Otter will occasionally haul out on ice or rocks and sleep. It is very uncommon for California Sea Otters to haul out.
Short clawed otters are nocternal.
There are both freshwater (river otters) and salt water otters.
Yes because it is aquatic
No. They usually sleep when it gets dark.
In the water
Habitat destruction and water pollution are the main threats to otters.
Otters are a semi-aquatic mammal. So they don't live exclusively in water.
Sea otters are diurnal. North American river otters' sleep habits, on the other hand, are more diverse: They are mostly active from dusk through dawn, although they are diurnal during the winter.
sea otters excrete in water and on land
