Why do pandas haven black and white strips?

To put it bluntly, nobody truly knows. There are two theories.

One theory is that pandas evolved their unique black and white fur in order to stand out in their forest habitat, enabling them to recognise each other, especially for mating purposes. Pandas may be able to recognise each other through markings, like humans can recognise each other's faces. Pandas are also shy when it comes to mating, so helping them stand out amongst each other is beneficial for helping them spot potential mating partners.

Another theory is that it serves as a form of camouflage when hiding amongst bamboo and climbing in treetops. Pandas often climb trees for safety. And when they do, it is sometimes difficult to spot them at first glance, because on the backdrop of the sky, they just look like a big clump of the tree.
