For the same reasons mankind and every other kind of predator "slaughter" their prey: to feed themselves. In this case, with the meat, of course, but also by selling the skin and the blubber and get some income to feed their family. An average sealer would get around 5 000$ to 6 000$ each season. It might seems little, but sealers are not rich people and it means about 20% of their annual income.

There's also a question of keeping the balance in the ecosystem. If the seal populations are not controlled, there will be no fish left in the sea because they don't have much other predators beside a few killer whales and sharks.
