Because Whales are one of two types of marine mammal, and it would be cruel to kill them all, as it is not our place to shoot them etc.
This could also cause the food chain to change, and affect the biodiversity of the oceans. Whales, like all living creatures, contribute in some way to our ecosystem. Killing off all or most of the whales may cause an unhealthy increase in certain plankton, krill and, in the case of killer whales, large mammals, such as seals. A sudden increase in any or all of these species could cause untold damage to the oceans.
I don't think they have a way of protecting themselves. They are usually eaten by whales anyways and there isn't much protection from a whale if you are as small as krill. They can protect themselves but not against whales. They protect themselves by traveling in large numbers.

It keeps it warm.
Blue whales don't need to protect themselves because their so big. They don't have any natural predators but their calves are vulnerable to killer whales. The only threat to adults are humans.
Because we want them to be their for further generations
