Platypuses spend much of their time diving for food and swimming underwater to hunt for tiny crustaceans, insect larvae and annelid worms. They have sensitive ears, so having ear slits which are closed off by folds means that their ears remain protected from water entering. For the same reason, platypuses close their eyes underwater. They do not need to see or hear whilst underwater, as they find their food using the sensitive electroreceptors in their bill.
They make the dogs ear soft and flappy.
