It is my understanding that they do slip on ice like many other animals.

What helps them though is their wide paws and four legs. They can distribute their weight out on the ice, not causing too much of a push in one direction. They're very stable if they go at a regular pace on a level surface.

If their friction (increased by their weight) gives way, they're toast just like anyone else.
