Why does your puppy lick its pee?

When a dog licks another dogs' urine they're using an organ in the roof of their mouth which humans, thankfully, don't possess. This organ does something which is rather strange, the nearest thing I can get in a description is that it allows them to taste scent.. which allows dogs to analyze scent in a way which we cannot even begin to imagine.

We currently have 2 German Shepherds, one of which is a 14-year old male and the other a 6-year old female. We've previously had 2 female Shepherds as well. Only the male Shepherd has licked urine, and not his own, but it's a "habit" he first started ~4 years ago. While most humans view this as "disgusting" behavior, urine itself is sterile and therefore not harmful to the dog.

If it's a female it could be instinct telling her to clean up after 'puppies'.

But more than likely it's a nutrition problem: Most dry and canned foods are terrible for pets, they contain very little of what your pet needs and are mostly grain and fat.

Try putting your dog on vitamin supplements (you should find them at PetSmart or most herb/vitamin shops) and add some grilled chicken or fish to its food.

If that doesn't help contact your Vet or an animal behaviorist.

it does not lick it! it smells it and then remembers where it peed. even if it did pee and lick it , it would probably be getting the rest of the nutrition out! i have got two dogs so i would no!

Dogs sense the world differently and have little to no concept of hygiene. Dogs experience neither the bad taste nor the crushing guilt/sexual arousal that ordinarily comes when, for example, a human licks another human's genitalia.
