Placental (or eutherian) mammals nourish their fetuses by a placenta that is connected to the umbilical cord; a belly button is the scar that remains from the umbilical cord removal. Non-placental mammals include monotremes (metatherian mammals), which lay eggs, and marsupials (prototherian mammals), which nurture their young in a pouch. Non-placental mammals do not have belly buttons.
