Why is chocolate bad for horses?

That would probably be alright as a treat not an everyday diet kinda thing. I fed my horse granola bars with chocolate in them and he still lived. I fed him just plain chocolate too, he liked that. Non-chocolate granola bars should not hurt your horse unless it has a very sensitive stomach.

Medical treatment involves inducing vomiting within two hours of ingestion, or contacting a veterinarian.

It's bad for horses due to the same reason it's bad for cats and dogs; Theobromine.Theobromine cannot be broken down by animals other than humans. In non-human animals it will build up in the system when fed and can cause really bad reactions, even fatal reactions.Theobromine Is also found in; tea, cola beverages, acai berries and a few types of roots and other sweets.
