i suggest you get a urine sample checked at the vet to make sure he does not have a urinary problem (such as crystals or and infection). if he has normal urine and checks out ok at the vet, it may be he is exhibiting signs of stresssuch that he does not feel secure in his own environment. has anything changed in the house? (new baby, new furniture, carpets, building works, new pets?) try to make him feel as secure as possible in his own home- allow him a tray in the house in a secure location and a high -up covered sleeping place. allow secure access to food and water so he is not competing for anything. is he the only cat you own? are there new cats in the neighbourhood that are upsetting him?
other things your vet could help you out with to alleviate his signs if it is behavioral would be use of a feliway diffuser to make him feel more secure in his environment or possibly even use of anti anxiety food supplements such as zylkene- ask your vet.
