Elephants now live in 2% of the land that they once occupied. Due to the fact that they are now concentrated in small areas they are a far greater burden on the environment. The is some speculation on what the carrying capacity is for elephant as there is no real scientific studies available. Elephants consume about 200 kgs of food a day so their presence on game reserves are very noticeable. Culling is the practice of shooting usually an entire herd of elephants to reduce the over all number in an area. It is a controversial practice which is questioned by many Scientists in South Africa. More scientific study needs to be done to support the practice as there are other methods that can used to keep down the population. The first is to close down artificially created water holes that are created for tourists. The abundance of water increased elephant populations.
