I can't believe I know the answer to this one! I have a customer who used to breed and train thoroughbreds and she mentioned this one day about 2 months ago!

When a mare starts to eat dirt, that means there is an imbalance in her diet. Some minerals or vitamins are missing. Dirt eating is a symptom.
