As far as pet cats and dogs go, cats are pretty much 1 size whereas dogs come in a variety of sizes. Dogs also tend to be more loyal and get more attached to their "masters". Dogs have to be trained to hunt whereas it just is instinct to cats. Cats purr and meow, dogs bark and wag their tail when they're excited or happy. Cats can be taught tricks but it is easier to train dogs. I think cats are more easily amused too (ex. give em a box or loose wrapping paper and they'll be good for a while).
Rottweilers were first used as cattle droving dogs in Rome. Until around 1900, they were then used as police dogs for a brief period and then mainly as a companion dog. They were never bred or intended to be "guard" dogs or hunting dogs for humans. It is only their willingness to be trained, their loyalty, size and looks that have lead to them sometimes being trained as guard dogs these days. They are much more suited to being loyal well trained house pets.
