Why do witches have Black cats?

Most Modern Witches don't have black cats. A real Witches' familiar can be an animal of any kind and any color. The black cat is a stereotype, but there is a true association with black cats and Witchcraft however. Many cultures have superstitions about black cats, often ascribing either "good luck" or "bad luck" to them. Folk Magick teaches that the black color is a strong antecedent for magickal properties. Black cats have played a major role for centuries in folklore, superstition, and mythology. Black cats in the middle ages were believed to be witches' familiars, and some people even believed them to be witches' incarnate. Many of these old superstitions about black cats exist to this day. (Here is one you may be familiar with: In Yorkshire, England, it may be lucky to own a black cat, but it is unlucky to have one cross your path. Many People [including Pagans!] maintain this superstition to this day.])Black Cats and WitchesBlack cats have long been associated with witches and witchcraft to the extent that during October, the Month of Halloween, black cats and witches are favorite icons used for costumes, home decor, and party themes. This trend is so embedded in modern society that we've forgotten that the modern holiday we celebrate as Halloween has ancient beginnings as well as names: Samhein (pronounced Sow-en) and All Hallows' Eve. Despite these religious beginnings of Halloween, old beliefs about black cats and witches still play a large part in this holiday.Black Cats as Witches' FamiliarsIt was largely in the Middle Ages that the black cat became affiliated with evil. Because cats are nocturnal and roam at night, they were believed to be supernatural servants of witches, or even witches themselves. Folklore has it that if a witch becomes human (but, hmmmm... aren't real Witches already human?), her black cat will no longer reside in her house. Some believe that black cats are witches in disguise, or witches reborn (this of course, is not always necessarily the view that a Witch would have.... but many Witches do believe in reincarnation of soul energy.) Others believe black cats are witches' familiars (beings that aid witches in performing their craft)(This is the view an average Witch would have.) Not all familiars were black cats though; some were cats of other colors, dogs, pigs, or other animals. For several centuries "witches" were rounded up, tried, and killed by burning or other violent methods; often their familiars were killed along with them.

Why was a cat assoiciated with witches?

I think it was because black cats mean bad luck if you cross them, so they wanted witches to seem even more evil!

Do black cats protect a witchs powers?

No. If so, so many witches wouldn't have been burned.

Why do people use black cats as one of halloween's themes when they're not bad luck I - have owned a black cat for about 3 years so why do they use them for Halloween?

In mythology black cats were often associated with witchcraft; it was believed that witches had a special pet called a "familar" which was usually a small animal like a cat (often but not always black) or an owl. well its sayed that sitanics sacrifice black cats on that day. so id suggest that anyone who has a black cat to be careful that day

Why are black cats bad luck?

Black cats are supposedly bad luck because witches were supposed to own them. People have also thought that black cats were an omen, bad things would cross your path once you looked a black cat in the eyes. Personally, bad luck is black cats because there is a myth that once there was on black cat that the queen of England loved so much, but then one day he ran away so she cursed and said,''curse all the black cats in history to have pain and suffering and who ever crosses one shall have bad luck!'' Note: becareful of them Black cats are not evil i have two and they are the most lovable things in this world and they are NOT bad luck, if u think they are then you might want to think again there the best cats ever. How would you feel if YOU were a black cat?

Why are bats and black cats associated with vampires?

Probably because they are considered to be pets of witches and other evil sorcerers. A bat's fur and a black cat's are both dark in colour and vampires are considered to like dark things. Also bats and some cats come out at night and so do vampires. There is such thing as a vampire bat and quite a lot of cat's bite their owners so that is also something they have in common.

Why do black cats have bad reputations?

In ancient history, especially in the Fertile Crescent, there were opposing beliefs about the black cat, and how you viewed the animal depended upon your culture and religion. Ancient Egyptians treasured the black cat and some even felt the cat possessed spiritual qualities. Egyptians often mummified their family pets, especially black cats. The Jews and the Babylonians, however, felt all cats were related to serpents, especially in their habit of curling up near warm places like hearths. All three cultures believe the cat had inherent spiritual qualities. Ancient Greeks, like the Egyptians, associated cats with godliness, and believed that Artemis often took the form of a cat. Some contend that the strongest influence on the negative attitude toward the black cat stems from the Crusades first, and the Early American preoccupation with witchcraft. This may be in part true. Still tied to some type of spiritual origin, black cats were often thought to be the familiars of witches, a belief dating to the Middle Ages. To own or possess a black cat was to potentially suggest you were a witch or worshipper of the devil, and that the cat was your familiar. The color was important too, since black cats couldn't be seen well in the dark when you'd conduct your evil schemes. Edgar Allan Poe furthered suspicions regarding the animal by writing undoubtedly one of the most frightening short stories The Black Cat which maintains the connection between feline and the spirit world

How and why did the black cat superstition come true?

I have a feeling it is because of the fact that one of the most popular familiars for witches is a black cat. And back then they were mightily afraid of witches...i think that's where the Friday the 13 superstition came from as well. But of course not all witches are evil, so i don't think the black cat superstition really is true

Witches burned in France at the stake?

yes. people accused of being witches were burned at stake, sometimes, people thought that witches could take the form of cats, so if you saw a cat more then three times, and it was the same, the cat would be found and burned at stake.

What does a black cat mean in Britain?

The same it means anywhere else. But in Victorian times black cats used to be bad luck if you saw one, i guess because some widows who were named as witches had cats for company because their husbands were deceased, and i guess some of them were black. But who really believes any of that junk, i mean they believed in witches back then! Anyway i am British and i own a black cat called Cookie, shes lovely, the best cat anyone could wish for! So don't judge by folktales, i mean, we live in the 20 century not the 15th! Hope this helps :-)

What kind of experiments do witches practice on cats?

Witches do not perform experiments. They perform spells and rituals similar to what other religions perform. As far as the correlation between cats and witches goes. Most Witches (or Wiccans or member of any other Pagan sect) are worshipers of nature. Most witches have what is called a Familiar. A familiar is an animal that a person chooses as their pet. Sometimes they are considered their spirit animal. Not all "Witches" are cat people. Some like other animals like dogs or really any other animal that is tame and could be considered a pet. Cats are an extremely mysterious creature. Cat's already have a lot of superstitious ideas laid upon them so when you add that to the reputations of Witches or the Occult arts you basically get a heavy and very mysterious vibe to Pagan practitioners.
