Will a year old ferret get along with a baby ferret?

Has the older ferret ever been around other ferrets? If not, he may not know how to play with another ferret, baby ferrets are a bundle of energy. A 2 year old ferret is almost considered to be middle age, considering a ferrets life span is about 7 years. Get a favorite toy to play with the older one and get the young one involved. You need to play with them until they learn to play together. My ferrets age are too far apart - a 9 year old female that mostly sleeps all the time and gets irritated at the 3 1/2 year old male wanting to play with her. So I'm the one that provides playtime for the young ferret.

Generally speaking all ferrets will eventually learn to get along. Older ferrets tend to dislike younger ferrets because of the difference in energy levels. However a one year old ferret should still be active enough to keep up with a kit. All-in-all it is up to the ferrets, they may bond and they may not. It can take up to six months for a new ferret to be accepted and played with. Separate housing, bedding, litter boxes, toys, food bowls, and play time is a must for the first few weeks and possibly permanently. Many ferrets will not tolerate sharing their house or anything in it with another ferret.

There is a one year age difference in my ferrets and the two get along wonderfully. Just remember that if you do bring home a new ferret the first meeting can very well determine the future of the relationship. It is highly recommended that both ferrets be bathed with a fragrant shampoo and allowed to meet in a neutral setting. Keep meetings short and well supervised at first. This is how I introduced my two ferrets and they did very well.
